Church Cynicism

The Catholic Church just doesn't get it. After all that has happened in recent years, it's still involved in the cover up of the sexual abuse of minors. The latest case to come to light is that of the Kansas City bishop that has been indicted for "endangerment of a child", which, in plain speaking, means that he was aware that a priest of his diocese was a threat in this regard and did nothing. After learning that the priest had hundreds of child porn photos, he waited five months before he reported him to the authorities, giving him ample time to continue with his practice.

This is a clear example of the way in which Church officials drag their feet in these cases because, at bottom, in spite of all the protestations to the contrary by Vatican officials, they care more about covering their asses and maintaining an image, than about doing the right thing. They still think that they can get away with it. They are not sorry at all, and will keep doing what they please, hoping that "this too shall pass."

Fortunately, there are people who are not impressed by the priestly collar or the bishop's ring, and are willing to prosecute these criminals, no matter what.

The Catholic Church's sex abuse scandal won't go away; instead, it keeps growing every day.  Take the story out of Belgium, where a report has been issued that details what went on, including more than a dozen suicides linked to the abuse perpetrated by priests and  a cover up that continues to this day, when a Belgian bishop suggested that a complaint be withheld until 2011, when the bishop who covered up for the offending priest will retire.  With each passing day, it becomes more and more difficult to hold that this behavior was just the work of a few rogue priests.  There are just too many cases all around the world, for anyone to believe such a thing. No Honor

As a firm believer in independence for Puerto Rico from the United States, I sympathize with independence movements all around the world, as well as with the recognition of those who have fought for it. Having said that, I find it absurd that India plans to spend $33 million on a statue twice the size of the Statue of Liberty to honor one of its independence heroes. Especially so, when that is twice the expenditure for girls' education and $8 million more than what will be spent for women's safety, in a country in which the rape of women is brutal and commonplace. It makes you wonder about what Gandhi would have said about something like this.
