Fair and Square

Every once in a while, the American government puts out a statement in which it recognizes the "importance" of Latin America and promises to pay attention to it and have a new policy towards it. Recently, Obama sort of apologized for past sins and promised to do better. Now a group of U.S. embassies personnel, has met in Puerto Rico, and seems to want to do the right thing.

Now, this shouldn't be so difficult. Latin America wants to be respected and treated fairly by all parties concerned. If the U.S. does that on a consistent basis, its neighbors from south of the border will reciprocate, and everybody will benefit from it.

Here's a start: Stop referring to Latin America as the U.S."backyard" and, most of all, treating it as such.
