The Fast-Track to Sainthood

The rush to, ultimately, canonize John Paul II is unseemly, at best, in an institution that prides itself on the deliberate way it proceeds. Traditionally, the Catholic Church takes forever to decide most things, giving the appearance of careful consideration and, I suppose, divine guidance. So, it's rather surprising that they are in such a hurry to make the former Pope a saint.

As I think I may have said before, this seems like a diversion from the pedophilia scandal that has rocked the Church and appears to never go away. It's something to talk about, other that the latest revelation of the Church's complicity and cover up of its priests all around the world. But, all the hoopla about John Paul II won't make people forget what has happened and continues to happen with the parish pederasts around the globe.

There's another point to be made, while we're bombarded with all this sainthood propaganda. The fact is that John Paul II, by virtue of being Pope for such a long time, was in the Vatican at the time that a lot of these abuses were going on or being covered up. So, naturally, we must ask ourselves, what did he do about it ? Maybe he was so concerned with bringing down communism, that he wasn't paying too much attention to a "minor" matter such as his priests abusing minors. Or maybe his being away so much from his post at Rome, traveling all around the world, got him distracted and out of touch with such a distasteful reality.

In any case, there are some hard questions to be answered about how good a Pope John Paul II really was. But, I suppose we'll have to wait for the Final Judgment for that, because there's not a chance in hell that he won't be declared a saint in record time.

  1. What a strange god, whose job has to be done by mere mortals. In this case, declaring "saint" a former living human being.
