The Way We Were

When you get to be my age, you start to look back at your life, yes, to "the way we were." Marvin Hamlisch has died. He will forever be remembered for his music, especially that 1974 song for the movie. Like so many others, I loved it from the very first time that it was sung onscreen by Streisand. It was played at my wedding in church that same year. It has a haunting quality to it, and the lyrics tell a story of a deep love that, ultimately, is unable to save a relationship.

Now, after all these years, the words resonate like never before: "What's too painful to remember, we simply choose to forget. So, it's the laughter, we will remember, whenever we remember the way we were."

I will never forget the way we were; the song and in my life.
