Regarding the call for a recount in the Venezuelan election, I only have one question: Would the U.S., the Organization of American States and other American lackeys be calling for it, if Capriles had won by the same margin?

After a nine-day surfing competition, there has been a riot that no one seems to have an explanation for. Until now, surfing was one of the few sports that had not been marred by violence. Well, welcome to the real world of sport violence, in which fans and participants go berserk over God-knows- what silliness, and engage in the destruction of property and violence against other people who are just as insane. This just goes to show that sports are no magic wand  to make people better human beings. In fact, all it does is turn them into savages and irrational human beings.

Beating Around the Bush

Laura Bush has waited all these years to come clean about the car crash, in which, when she was 17, she killed a young man.  The fact is that she was speeding, got distracted, ran a stop sign and killed him.  According to her, she hasn't had a good night's sleep since.  Of course, she got away with it.  Hell, she even married a future President of the United States...not that he was much of one. Maybe, if justice had been done, by her being punished in some fashion, she wouldn't be so haunted by the memory of that tragedy.  I suppose she knows, deep down, that she deserved to pay for what she did.  Ultimately, she has ended paying for it all her life.

Desperately Seeking Sainthood

Not that it means a whole lot one way or another, but the fast-track approach to John Paul II's sainthood is unseemly.  The Catholic Church has been usually very slow and deliberate in proclaiming someone as a saint, but this time is in an obvious hurry to do so. The Church seems rather desperate in trying to find the requisite number of "miracles" that can be attributed to the former Pope. My guess is that, given its never-ending and world-wide pedophilia scandal, and the recent money-laundering one, the Vatican is looking for some "good will" out of this new and contemporary saint.  It's a ploy to rally the troops and give them something to cheer about, but I don't think it's going to work. It would really be a miracle if it did.
