Speaking Your Peace

The new Miss Universe, the former Miss Colombia, has been put on the spot by the FARC, the rebel guerrilla group who has been negotiating peace terms with the Colombian government.  Since she seems to have ideas about the peace process, the group has invited her to take part in it. Essentially, it has asked her to put her lovely body where her lovely mouth is.

This is what happens when you ask beauty-pageant contestants all those seemingly-profound questions about peace and other world affairs. Maybe this will teach them all a lesson, to stick to the beauty part of it and forget about pretending that the pageants are about something else.

    Well put. I was saying something similar the other day. My take on this matter includes that, in my view, asking profound questions even to smart people -to be answered on the sport and in 30 seconds- is not a good way to measure "intelligence" anyway. So, even if you want the Miss Whatever to combine beauty with brains, the infamous questions are not the way to go about it. Or, is it?

Why Am I Not Surprised?

By now, everybody and his brother knew that Mark McGwire had used what euphemistically are called "performance-enhancing drugs", at some point in his career. There is just no way that someone, through exercise and nutrition alone, can get to be that strong in such a short time. But, Major League Baseball , ever hungry for revenues, looked the other way because the show that he and Sammy Sosa were putting on was too good to put a stop to. And then, José Canseco, "crazy Cuban" that he is, blew the whistle on everybody, and the whole pretense went to hell. Of course, he is a Latino and an admitted steroid user, so that made it easy to assassinate his character. But, ever so slowly, time has proven José right. All those who doubted him or damned him for being a snitch, now sing a different tune. For his part, McGwire has come clean half-heartedly. "Ah, To Be Young and Insane!"

A scientific study done in Britain, but covering 20 other countries, including the U.S., shows that people are developing dementia much earlier in life than ever before, as early as in their 40s. It has ceased to be an advanced aging problem, and the culprit appears to be an environment full of pollution, pesticides and chemicals, both in the outside and inside our homes. In other words, not only are we poisoning ourselves to death, but we are also driving ourselves crazy or mentally incompetent in the process. Well, that's progress for you.
