Beating Around the Bush

Laura Bush has waited all these years to come clean about the car crash, in which, when she was 17, she killed a young man.  The fact is that she was speeding, got distracted, ran a stop sign and killed him.  According to her, she hasn't had a good night's sleep since.  Of course, she got away with it.  Hell, she even married a future President of the United States...not that he was much of one. Maybe, if justice had been done, by her being punished in some fashion, she wouldn't be so haunted by the memory of that tragedy.  I suppose she knows, deep down, that she deserved to pay for what she did.  Ultimately, she has ended paying for it all her life.

Columbus' Curse

Although it wasn't altogether new, the 1992 celebration of the 500th anniversary of the discovery of America made it fashionable to malign Columbus big time.  From Indians from all over the Americas, who still hold a  grudge against the Spanish conquistadores , to latter-day revisionist historians, everybody got into the act of pissing on the erstwhile "Grand Admiral."  Year after year we keep hearing the same old story: he wasn't the first to come to America (everybody and his brother had been here before); if he was, it was only because he had some maps given to him by somebody else (or stolen) from somebody else; it was just a fluke, etc. It has become politically correct to badmouth Columbus. I suppose all those purists would have preferred that he stay home, leaving us all in a  perpetual Garden of Eden, untouched by the European culture.  This is nonsense.  No matter if, objectively, he wasn't the first to set foot on this part of the world or whate...

A Lesson Not Learned

It's ironic, to say the least, that Jews, who have been so persecuted throughout history, be as blatantly intolerant of their own people. This is what's happening in certain parts of Israel, where ultra-Orthodox Jews have become abusive and violent to other Jews, demanding that they adhere to an extremely strict code of conduct based on ancient religious beliefs and practices. Interestingly enough, some of the things they engage on are reminiscent of Nazi laws and procedures. All this time, people around the world have been led to believe that religious fanaticism was something that only Arabs and Muslims took part in. Now, the holier-than-thou Jews are seen acting as stupidly and viciously toward their fellow men as any other human group on earth.
