A Lesson from Chile

It's certainly encouraging to see the massive protests by students and teachers in Chile, that demand a major overhaul of the educational system. What sets them apart from other similar movements around the world is the fact that they are focusing on the issue of a quality education, not just a more affordable one. It seems that there is a consensus about the need to revamp the whole system, from grade school to the university level. So, it's not just a question of more money to be spent on public education, but of better content of what's being taught.

In a world that seems dominated by street protests, it's refreshing to see so many young people care so much for their education that they are willing to endure the hardships of these demonstrations, in order to petition their government to pay attention to their future.
